The Virginia Highlands

The Virginia Highlands trail is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been, the views and wildlife combined to make a wonderous expirence. We drove from Tennessee to the Highlands State Park but the overnight backpackers lot was full so we drove up to Elk Gap. Elk Gap was a easier hike by far and im sorta happy we ended up taking it instead because we were not throughlly prepared for the weather and ended up needing to stay on the Appalachain Trail Shelter. We hiked a section of the Appalachain Trail, There are several options on where to set up camp, we heiked up to Pine Mountain but about 3 miles before Pine Mountain there is a really nice bald. The Appalachain Trail was defentily the harder of the two trails we ended up taking. From Pine mountain we went back just a little bit to get to the shelter. The shelter is a nice shelter but be sure to hang your gear because there are mice. The Shelter is Located right at the conection point of Mt. Rogers to Pine Mountain so if you want to hike Mt. Rogers this is a great option. There are wild ponies which I personally loved, they will even let you pet them,(I dont reccomend it though as they may not be as nice as the one I petted). Hiking back we Took The Highland Horse Trail which is a lot easier of the two trails. Overall I loved this hike; I am sure you will too. This is a place I highly reccomend you visit before the Lord calls you home.
